Meet Kate Wrigglesworth

Working primarily in gouache, Kate uses naïve and expressive techniques to create colourful, decorative paintings that she thinks of as “Poetic Storytelling”. Each one is an imaginary story inspired by landscape, dance, music and poetry, reaching into an altogether ethereal world. Her distinctive style has its roots in her training in Theatre Design, where working from imagination was not just encouraged but essential, and her considerable background in modern and classical dance lends a lyrical quality to everything she makes.

Alongside her paintings, Kate has developed a craft dimension to her work through beautifully decoupaged frames for giclée prints and originals, using wrapping paper of her own designs, a patchwork grid of her illustrations, to finish each one.

Her designs have reached a wide audience over the years, with greetings cards and published work produced in collaboration with Woodmansterne, WH Smith and British Waterways canal basins, which were funded by the Arts Council.

Kate has worked as an “Artist in Residence” in schools across the country and regularly gives demonstrations to art groups nationwide, as well as undertaking private commissions and contributing to community art projects including public sculptures and garden design.
