Make Your Own Woven Willow Christmas Trees
This Christmas come and join the Coddiwomplers for a willow weaving workshop at Blackthorpe Barn to make your own Christmas trees. Under the tuition of 2 experienced basket makers, you will learn some basic skills and techniques of willow weaving whilst creating beautiful Christmas decorations for your home.
In this workshop we’ll be creating beautiful striped Christmas Trees using the flat weave technique and a range of different basketry willows.
We’ll start by making a small, medium and large tree to arrange in a small log creating a beautiful, festive display. With any remaining time, participants can make more trees that can be used for decorating the home or given as homemade gifts.
This course is suitable for beginners, so no previous experience is necessary. However, some manual dexterity and hand strength will be required.
Whether you’ve always wanted to try willow weaving or simply fancy a creative escape as the festive days get closer, this relaxed and friendly workshop is the perfect way to spend a few hours in the run-up to Christmas.

- Make up a selection of flat-weave Christmas trees in different sizes
Who is this workshop suitable for?
- People aged 16 and over
- Beginners; no experience necessary
- Some manual dexterity and strength is required for weaving the willow
Your tutors are Stuart Fidler and Emma Booth, who together are the Coddiwomplers and who will teach you willow weaving in a fun and relaxed workshop.

What to Bring
- Wear comfortable clothing
- You don’t need to bring anything in particular, but please be aware that you will need some manual dexterity and strength for weaving the willow

Refund & cancellation policy
If you need to cancel a workshop
If you are unable to attend your booked workshop and notify us at least 7 full days in advance of the workshop date, we can offer a refund or a transfer to the same workshop on an alternative date, providing there are places available or a course is planned for the future.
If cancellation is within 7 full days of your workshop unfortunately we are unable to offer a refund. We do appreciate that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may mean that you can’t attend so we are happy for you to send along a friend to take your place. We will need their name and contact details prior to the workshop.
Our right to cancel a workshop
All our workshops have a minimum attendance level and may be cancelled if too few bookings are received. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone workshops at any time. Should we need to cancel a workshop, we will give you as much notice as possible of the cancellation. You will receive a full refund or, if you prefer, a transfer to an alternative available course, space permitting. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any liability for travel or other costs.

Accessible parking is available near the entrance to the Café/Shop area.
Please Note: The car park closes when the Roots Café closes and the entrance gates are locked after this time.
Blackthorpe Barn is situated just south of Junction 45 of the A14, three miles east of Bury St Edmunds, in the village of Rougham.
Look out for the entrance gates to a long tree-lined avenue at the White House junction, with the Barn on the right of the avenue. Please keep to the 20mph limit.
The Meadow Room can be found behind the old thatched Barn and behind Roots Café.

Join textile artist Caroline Hyde-Brown at Blackthorpe Barn and create your own unique piece of wild art using woven grasses and freshly grown flowers. You’ll work with a mini hand-held loom and take your finished creation home with you.
It’s suitable for complete beginners as well as those who already enjoy crafting.

ArtWorks @artworkseast is entering its second weekend, and then there’s just one more week to visit.
If you haven’t been yet, now is the time. Over 300 original works by 28 established East Anglian artists are on show at Blackthorpe Barn, including paintings, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media and more. All of it available to buy and all of it made by artists who know their craft.

Throwback Thursday to the beginning of one of the biggest projects we’ve undertaken at Blackthorpe Barn.
Back in February, the scaffolding and hoarding started going up as we began the full rethatching of this incredible 16th-century building.
It was quite a sight to see the work get underway, with around 12 highly skilled thatchers spending around 40 days carefully renewing the roof using traditional techniques.
Blackthorpe Barn has been part of Rougham Estate for more than 500 years and remains a real icon of the Estate. Today, it continues to be at the heart of what we do, currently hosting the Artworks East exhibition and in November, transforming into one of our biggest Christmas events, with our much loved Christmas Shop and Arts & Crafts Fair.
So while the thatching may be a traditional craft, the Barn certainly has plenty of life left in it now.

The recent rain has certainly been welcomed by the cattle on the Estate!
After a long, dry summer, the grass is getting a much needed boost and is starting to green up again, giving the cattle plenty to enjoy.
It’s always good to see the Estate responding to a change in the weather and nature getting back to doing what it does best.

Rougham Pumpkins opens again in 3 weeks! Yes, it’s that time again. 🎃🎉
