Christmas Willow Decorations Workshop
Join the Coddiwomplers for a festive workshop this Christmas and discover the traditional craft of willow weaving.
Guided by two experienced basket makers, you’ll learn a range of traditional willow weaving techniques as you make up to four festive decorations. Every piece will be unique and handcrafted by you, making them perfect for decorating your home or for giving as gifts.
This workshop is suitable for beginners, so no previous experience is necessary. However, please note that willow weaving is a hands-on craft, so a reasonable level of hand strength and manual dexterity is required.
Whether you’ve always wanted to try willow weaving or simply fancy a creative festive escape, this relaxed and friendly workshop is the perfect way to spend a few hours in the run-up to Christmas.
What Will I do?
- Learn some basic skills and techniques of willow weaving
- Make up to 4 willow decorations for your home
- The items you will be shown how to make include:
a wreath, a mini reindeer, a star and a spiral-weave Christmas tree
Who is this workshop suitable for?
- People aged 16 and over
- Beginners; no experience necessary
- Some manual dexterity and strength is required for weaving the willow
Your tutors are Stuart Fidler and Emma Booth, who together are the Coddiwomplers and who will teach you willow weaving in a fun and relaxed workshop.

Please arrive in good time in order to park and make your way to the Meadow Room.

What to Bring
- Wear comfortable clothing
- You don’t need to bring anything in particular, but please be aware that you will need some manual dexterity and strength for weaving the willow

Refund & cancellation policy
If you need to cancel a workshop
If you are unable to attend your booked workshop and notify us at least 7 full days in advance of the workshop date, we can offer a refund or a transfer to the same workshop on an alternative date, providing there are places available or a course is planned for the future.
If cancellation is within 7 full days of your workshop unfortunately we are unable to offer a refund. We do appreciate that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may mean that you can’t attend so we are happy for you to send along a friend to take your place. We will need their name and contact details prior to the workshop.
Our right to cancel a workshop
All our workshops have a minimum attendance level and may be cancelled if too few bookings are received. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone workshops at any time. Should we need to cancel a workshop, we will give you as much notice as possible of the cancellation. You will receive a full refund or, if you prefer, a transfer to an alternative available course, space permitting. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any liability for travel or other costs.

There is plenty of free parking available.
Accessible parking is available near the entrance to the Café/Shop area.
Please Note: The car park closes when the Roots Café closes and the entrance gates are locked after this time.
Blackthorpe Barn is situated just south of Junction 45 of the A14, three miles east of Bury St Edmunds, in the village of Rougham.
Look out for the entrance gates to a long tree-lined avenue at the White House junction, with the Barn on the right of the avenue. Please keep to the 20mph limit.
The Meadow Room can be found behind the old thatched Barn and behind Roots Café.

ArtWorks @artworkseast is entering its second weekend, and then there’s just one more week to visit.
If you haven’t been yet, now is the time. Over 300 original works by 28 established East Anglian artists are on show at Blackthorpe Barn, including paintings, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media and more. All of it available to buy and all of it made by artists who know their craft.

Throwback Thursday to the beginning of one of the biggest projects we’ve undertaken at Blackthorpe Barn.
Back in February, the scaffolding and hoarding started going up as we began the full rethatching of this incredible 16th-century building.
It was quite a sight to see the work get underway, with around 12 highly skilled thatchers spending around 40 days carefully renewing the roof using traditional techniques.
Blackthorpe Barn has been part of Rougham Estate for more than 500 years and remains a real icon of the Estate. Today, it continues to be at the heart of what we do, currently hosting the Artworks East exhibition and in November, transforming into one of our biggest Christmas events, with our much loved Christmas Shop and Arts & Crafts Fair.
So while the thatching may be a traditional craft, the Barn certainly has plenty of life left in it now.

The recent rain has certainly been welcomed by the cattle on the Estate!
After a long, dry summer, the grass is getting a much needed boost and is starting to green up again, giving the cattle plenty to enjoy.
It’s always good to see the Estate responding to a change in the weather and nature getting back to doing what it does best.
