MEET Dominic Upson

Dominic lives and works on a small family-run apple farm in Suffolk. He has spent the last six years living and working in London and three years studying at Central Saint Martins, a BA in Ceramic Design. This was a great introduction to the ceramic world, from making moulds, glaze chemistry and different ways of making, but he was always focused on the potter’s wheel, developing his throwing skills.

After graduating, he worked at Turning Earth, an open-access pottery studio in East London. It was here he developed his skills as a technician, fixing kilns, making up glazes and the general day-to-day running of the studio. He was also trained as a teacher, which he thoroughly enjoyed and found a rewarding experience.

Lisa Hammond MBE was looking for an apprentice, so he applied and was chosen to join her studio at Maze Hill pottery. He learnt so much in such a short space of time; from production throwing the Maze Hill standard range, making mugs with a slight curve in, hakam brushwork and getting a higher quality out of making. He also learnt soda firing and reduction firing.

Lately, he has been creating small animal sculptures, including tropical fish and birds.
