The wait is over: harvest has begun here on the Rougham Estate.

It’s all systems go for the farm team now and with the sunshine on our side, it’s time to bring in the crops, kicking off one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the farming year.

Today we started with Winter Barley, a variety known as KWS Tardis. This particular crop is grown as a feed variety and will go on to form part of the feed rations for livestock across East Anglia, playing an important role in supporting local agriculture.

As well as providing grain, the straw from the barley will be baled and used as bedding for livestock. Once used, it still doesn’t go to waste; instead, it’s returned to the fields in the form of manure, which helps replenish the soil with essential organic nutrients.

It’s a great example of the circular nature of farming, where waste is kept to a minimum and everything has its place in the wider ecosystem. We’ll keep sharing harvest updates as the season rolls on!
