Full-Day Willow Basket Workshop
This spring come and join Stuart Fidler and Emma Booth – the Coddiwomplers – for a fun, relaxed willow weaving workshop.
Under the tuition of two experienced basketmakers, you will learn to make a simple striped basket using traditional basketry techniques. This is our simplest round basket to weave, making it an ideal introduction to basketry.
What Will I do?
- Start by completing a pre-prepared base
- Have a choice of willows to create stripy sides to your basket
- Finish by adding a pegged willow handle, making a perfect Easter basket
Who is this workshop suitable for?
- People aged 16 and over
- Beginners; no experience necessary
- Some manual dexterity and strength is required for weaving the willow

At about 12:30 take a break for lunch. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch or visit our new Roots Café.

Refund & cancellation policy
If you need to cancel a workshop
Should you be unable to attend your booked workshop and notify us at least 7 full days in advance of the workshop date, we can offer a refund or a transfer to the same workshop on an alternative date, if possible.
If cancellation is within 7 full days of your workshop unfortunately we are unable to offer a refund. We appreciate that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may mean that you can’t attend so you are welcome to send a friend to take your place. Please tell us their name and contact details prior to the workshop.
Our right to cancel a workshop
All our workshops have a minimum attendance level and may be cancelled if too few bookings are received. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone workshops at any time and will give you as much notice as possible of the cancellation. You will receive a full refund or, if you prefer, a transfer to an alternative available course, space permitting. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any liability for travel or other costs.

Accessible parking is available near the entrance to the Café/Shop area.
Please Note: The car park closes when the Roots Café closes and the entrance gates are locked after this time.
Blackthorpe Barn is situated just south of Junction 45 of the A14, three miles east of Bury St Edmunds, in the village of Rougham.
Look out for the entrance gates to a long tree-lined avenue at the White House junction, with the Barn on the right of the avenue.
Blackthorpe Barn’s black and white signs direct visitors from local roads.
The Meadow Room can be found behind the old thatched Barn and behind Roots Café.

What the Shell On Earth is this?! 😉
Perfect for those hot sunny days when we have little rain, or if you`re going away for a short period, this product is not only pretty as it glistens in the sunshine, but it retains moisture for pot plants - or it helps with drainage in borders if it`s dug in. But let`s not forget it can help with weed control, too.
Produced as an off shoot of a fishing process, the shells were a waste product after the whelks are taken as a food source, but now they are crushed for use in gardens and landscaping.
We love this product which can be bought in our Garden Room Shop.

If you go down to the Barn today… you’ll notice that there is a new car park to use and a new entrance to Roots Café and the Garden Room shop.
During the summer months, private functions and weddings are held in the big Barn, so the shop and café will be using the “Christmas tree” car park during this time, with the entrance through the arch. New signage will show you where to go.
There is plenty of parking and accessible parking too, with the big overflow car parks still available.
And yes, we are still open daily, 9-4 for the café and 10-4 for the shop.

We can`t believe it`s the third week of National Walking Month already! If you`ve enjoyed our walks so far, you may want to try the more challenging walk around the Moat Meadow, which is 3.5 miles and is a "hard" route.
It may be more challenging (meaning it crosses stiles and goes through a meadow where there may be cattle), but it is still a very interesting and pleasant walk.
You start by going through the woods with a lovely view of Rougham Church appearing in the distance, and you pass the magnificent lychgate with carvings and seats - a structure that was built in 1901 in memory of the previous rector Morton Shaw.
This route then takes you towards the village of Rougham and along a quiet country lane, returning through an old meadow where there may be cattle, so we recommend you keep your dog on a short lead. Coming back through the woods, you arrive back at Blackthorpe Barn where our Roots Café is ready to welcome you and your family for a well-deserved refuel.
An interactive map or a downloadable description of the walk is available on the website. Do remember that the paths can be muddy, so wear sensible footwear. Please also remember the gates to the car parks at the Barn will be shut when the shop and cafe close (by around 4.30pm).

We can`t believe it`s the third week of National Walking Month already! If you`ve enjoyed our walks so far, you may want to try the more challenging walk around the Moat Meadow, which is 3.5 miles and is a "hard" route.

The glorious sunflower seeds are being drilled in this good weather … which means that summer is on its way! Long, lazy days hanging out at the Sunflower Patch… who is excited already?🙋😆
We’ll keep you posted about how the seedlings are growing and when we know more about opening times. Until then keep your fingers crossed for just the right amount of sun and just the right amount of rain🤞🌞🌧️
