About this event

This Spring, come join the Coddiwomplers for a hands-on willow weaving workshop. Guided by two experienced basket makers, you’ll learn traditional willow weaving skills and techniques while creating beautiful pieces for your home or garden.

In this workshop participants will be taught how to weave willow flowers. This project uses traditional basketry techniques commonly employed in forming the base of a basket, making it an ideal introduction for anyone interested in basket weaving. By the end of the workshop you’ll have created a large willow flower, perfect for hanging on a wall or mounting on a stem to display in your garden.

The course is suitable for beginners and no prior experience is required. Some manual dexterity and hand strength will be needed.

Since the Barn rethatch has been so popular, we’ve decided to share regular updates on our progress and answer some of your questions.

While you can see the transformation in person (but only from the ground), these posts are for those who can’t stop by regularly and for those who want to see it from a bird’s eye view. They also serve as a wonderful visual record of the project.

As you drive down the avenue towards Blackthorpe Barn, you’ll notice the piles of straw waiting to be transported to the Barn by digger. Progress is well underway and we’re looking forward to sharing the milestones with you!

To answer some of your questions:

Is it full of life?
Absolutely. The old thatch is a bustling habitat for spiders, beetles, moth larvae, and more. It’s its own little ecosystem!

Can we watch?
We’d love for you to see the progress! You and your children are more than welcome to observe from our designated safe zones.

Does the new thatch go on top of the old?
Yes! As long as the base layer is still in good condition, they don't need to strip it back to the rafters. We remove the weathered surface and fix the new thatch directly into the sturdy old layer. It’s a bit like adding a fresh, protective coat over a solid foundation.

Keep your questions coming. We love to answer them!

It’s been just over a week since the master thatchers @dodsonbrosthatchers arrived at the Estate to start work on our much loved Blackthorpe Barn.

Watching this ancient craft unfold is a rare privilege for the Estate so we wanted to share the journey so far with you, as it’s not every day you get to see a piece of history being preserved quite like this.

If there is anything you’d like to know about the thatching leave a comment and we’ll try and include the answer in our next update post.
