Sitting proudly here all year, our tree sculpture can often be missed by visitors, but this is a lovely time of year to slow down and really explore the Estate and grounds.
Forest Floor is a sculpture commissioned by Rougham Estate in 2021 to mark thirty years of Arts and Crafts events at Blackthorpe Barn. Created from an old oak tree grown on the Estate, it has been cut along its entire length to open like a book. And like a book, it tells a story – the hidden life beneath the ground in an ancient woodland. Look closely and you’ll spot a face at one end, along with details of the oak’s structure and growth.
At its heart, the piece is about discovery. It reminds us that a woodland or forest is one vast, connected organism which, when left undisturbed, can survive for thousands of years. A precious link to the past, and one that feels especially relevant now and for the future.
You can find Forest Floor at Blackthorpe Barn, in the meadow just across the car park. Visitors are very welcome to wander between the ‘pages’ and take it all in.
