Meet Jadwiga Zaleski
Born in Poland, Jadwiga grew up as an only child, surrounded by the love and encouragement of her parents. Excelling in school, especially in writing and history, her interests gradually turned toward arts and crafts—her mother’s favourite pursuit. This early influence planted the seeds of a lifelong passion for creativity.
Jadwiga’s passion for creation and love of colour, light and music caused her to pursue formal studies in arts and crafts at both secondary school and at teacher training college, learning skills ranging from embroidery and knitting to glass and woodwork. After graduation, she spent four years teaching crafts to primary school children, further deepening her love for making and creating.
Life took a different turn when she met a Cambridge scientist, which led her to England and away from the arts. Determined to adapt, she learned English, typewriting and driving, eventually starting a career at the University of Cambridge. She completed a course in Business and Finance and went on to enjoy a fulfilling career in university administration, financial services, and local government.
Later in life, she has returned to her creative roots, discovering a passion for jewellery-making through college courses and workshops in Cambridge. What began as a hobby soon became a thriving small business, with her handcrafted pieces featured at over 25 craft fairs a year.
Twelve years on, she now travels less, but her dedication to beading remains strong and the joy of creating continues to make her happy and her soul sing, as well as enriching her life by meeting so many creative people. Long may it last!
