And just like that, the Winter Barley is safely in the shed; a big job ticked off the harvest list.
With one crop down, it’s time to move on to the next: Winter Oilseed Rape.

You might remember seeing these fields in full yellow bloom back in May, a striking sight across the landscape. Since then the crop has been quietly ripening in the sun and it’s now ready to harvest.

Oilseed Rape is grown for the tiny black seeds it produces, which are packed with oil. Once harvested, the seeds are sent off to be crushed and pressed to extract this valuable oil.
The resulting product is bottled and sold in supermarkets as a familiar household cooking oil, used in kitchens across the country.

It’s a great example of how the crops grown here at Rougham Estate go on to play a part in everyday life, from vibrant field to frying pan!
